Trouble in Paradise

Image
I spent what looks to be my last week in jewelry tagging, sorting, and pricing (this part is important!) different pieces. I had an interesting experience on Wednesday that reminded me that service is not always easy, and we do make mistakes. It started off as my days normally do, grabbing a big clump of tangled necklaces and beginning detangling. There was a new volunteer who came in for the first time and she was working on jewelry with me. We talked a lot about everything from school to her job and to her hobbies, one of which is selling items on Ebay. She collected a little pile of jewelry and asked if I could price three of the items for her, which I am able to do and have been doing. She wanted what looked to me like broken jewelry; a bracelet missing a charm, a necklace with no clasp, and a small metal whistle. I priced it cheaply because I assumed the pieces would not have sold otherwise, she was presenting them as such, and I was trying to be kind bei...

Accessorizing the Seton Store

Another week down! We spent a lot of this week working on pricing, sorting, and organizing jewelry. It is very interesting how as we get more comfortable, we get more responsibility, and the workers seem to be trusting us more with tasks. I was nervous to start pricing because I did not want to mess up or under/over price things. However, I’ve been able to recognize quality jewelry and find out appropriate prices for items.  I found a pearl necklace today in a bin of jewelry and recognized that it may be high quality. After some research, I found out that it was a vintage and expensive piece and retails for $200-300. The workers let me walk through the process of selling expensive jewelry including writing up a description on the computer and printing it out.  The workers even trust us to create out own jewelry out of broken items. Today, I made two pairs of earrings out of broken necklaces. I think it is so cool that we are able to sell items that I made m...

Second Week At The Seton Store

Image
As I get more comfortable at the Seton Store, I am beginning to enjoy my time more and more. I have found myself looking forward to my shifts this week and enjoying stocking the shelves and helping customers. We spent a lot more time this week on the floor hanging up clothes, setting up Christmas decorations and items, and updating the sale section. The first picture I included was of a Christmas tree that me and Kaitlyn decorated together. We hung up ornaments that were for sale on it. I decided to include this picture because it represented the mark we are leaving on the Seton Store as volunteers. I am able to see more items that I have personally tagged or set out being sold and around the store, which is very cool because I can see first-hand the work that I am doing paying off.               The second picture I included is of the sale section. Every week, the items from ...

First Week At The Seton Store

Image
My first week! Coming into this week I was anxious and did not know what to expect as to what I would be doing or what my experience would be at all. However, I quickly realized I did not have anything to fear because I was warmly welcomed in by all of the staff, who walk me through everything and I can ask a million questions to, immediately. I spent a majority of my Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday shifts tagging, sorting, and hanging clothes. While it may sound boring, it ended up being relaxing and enjoyable in a weird way. I was also able to see all of the clothes being brought in, and the criteria clothes have to pass to be put on the floor. I spent a lot of my day on Thursday sorting clothes from donations and determining what we would sell, and donating clothes that were too dirty, smelly, or had rips or missing size tags.  The picture to the right is what my week looked like; tagging and hanging clothes, however this has become one of my favorite...
